Being the first university which was established by the Communist Paty of China(CPC) and the state in ethnic minority regions after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, IMU was launched at a high starting point in 1957. Li Jitong, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS), renowned biologist, Class A professor with Peking University and PhD of Yale University, came to teach at IMU and acted as the vice president of the university in charge of academic affairs. Besides, the CPC Central Committee and the central government selected a batch of well-known discipline leaders and academic backbones from a dozen or so prestigious universities across China, including Peking University, who brought with them long-accumulated academic traditions and sublime spirits of universities, which laid a solid foundation of management and healthy academic and campus atmosphere for the subsequent development of IMU.
